How to Use Waterpik® UltraThin Fluoride Varnish

Waterpik® UltraThin Fluoride Varnish is a 5% sodium fluoride varnish indicated for the treatment of dentinal hypersensitivity and as a cavity varnish. In independent studies, UltraThin was shown to go on thinner and have superior fluoride release in the first critical hours, as compared to the leading brand.

Waterpik® UltraThin Directions for Use

  1. For best results, dry teeth prior to application with air or by rubbing a 2"x2" (or other disposable cotton sponge) along the tooth surfaces. If any biofilm or calculus is apparent, a prophylaxis can be conducted for maximum varnish adherence.
  2. Peel open the foil lidding material, starting from the unsealed tab on the left side. Lift straight up to avoid ripping.
  3. Remove the brush and mix varnish until it reaches an even consistency.
  4. Apply a very thin coat of varnish evenly to all of the desired tooth surfaces.
  5. Let the varnish dry for approximately 20 seconds and then instruct the patient to close their mouth.
  6. Varnish hardens on contact with saliva so the patient may leave immediately after application.
  7. Instruct the patient to allow varnish to remain in contact with the tooth surfaces for a minimum of 4 hours. For maximum fluoride uptake, the varnish can remain on the teeth overnight and can be brushed off in the morning.
  8. It is recommended that the patient be instructed to only eat soft foods and drink cold liquids for 4 hours after treatment. Eating hard foods and brushing/flossing should be avoided during the treatment period.

Indications for Use: Dentinal hypersensitivity and cavity varnish.

Dosage: For the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity, in most cases, two applications at several days interval are sufficient. The fluoride content of Waterpik® UltraThin Varnish is dosed that neither acute nor chronic side effects are to be expected if applied according to instructions.

Dyspnea, although extremely rare, has occurred in asthmatic people. Nausea can occur in patients with known sensitive digestive systems, especially following extensive applications.
